Finding ways to be environmentally conscious is more important now than it has ever been. One way to do this is to use reclaimed materials for building projects.
I always strive to find innovative ways to use materials on the golf course. Not only is this a smart way to save money, it can be a way to add new and interesting aesthetics to a design.
A project that has been ongoing on the course is cleaning up the trees throughout. This has consisted of trimming and removal to increase sight lines and just shape things up overall. All of the removed trees have been saved for the purpose of reclaiming them into other projects. One such project was cutting the trunks and designing a cart path barrier. This is an ongoing project that has several purposes, one of which is that it has really increased the natural character of the course.
Another project that we recently completed was creating a retaining wall on the side of the cart path on the 3rd hole. This was done using all reclaimed stones. The stones were from the picnic area outside of the clubhouse that was demolished to make way for the event center. Instead of being thrown away, all of the stones were saved to use for building projects.
Finding and using reclaimed materials just requires imagination and a little bit of elbow grease. The reward of saving money while being environmentally conscious is well worth the effort.
