Safety is the most important aspect in any situation. Ensuring that your team is properly trained and aware of safe practices should be the number one priority for any operation.
The number one rule in my department is Be Safe.
While freshening everything up in preparation for the spring season, it is a great time to also focus on refreshing knowledge of safe practices. With busy schedules it can sometimes seem impossible to find time for training, I try to plan my safety training around down time, both scheduled and unscheduled, in order to maximize the efficiency of our department.
Some important topics that I focus on are:
-General safety practices *heat stress, proper lifting, eye and hearing safety, sun safety, slips & falls
-First aid and health
Safe Operation of Golf Course Equipment
-Heavy Equipment *mowers, tractors, carts, turf equipment, etc
-Light Equipment *chain saws, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, etc
Personal Protective Equipment
*What is it? How is it properly used? Importance of respirators
Etiquette and Employee/Guest Safety
Appropriate Member Communication
Hazardous Communications & Emergency Plans
There are of course many more areas that can be focused on depending on your operation, these are just some of the topics I highlight in my department. The main thing is that safety is a priority and all employees are aware of it’s importance.
